As faculty at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, India, he initiated one of the earliest human embryonic stem cell research programs. His laboratory has patented a novel label-free fluorescence marker for pluripotent human stem cells. His research has provided insights into the molecular basis of mental illness, drug-receptor interactions, and stem cell biology.  He helped establish a national repository of induced pluripotent stem cells from individuals with psychiatric disorders. Das received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Beckman Research Institute  City of Hope, Duarte, CA and at the University of California Irvine.
